What Is Home? is a latitudinal study of North America between Providence, RI and Seattle, WA as seen from the seat of a bicycle and through the lens of affordable housing. During the summer of 2016 myself and 28 other young adults rode our bicycles 4,157 miles from coast to coast. Our goal? To raise awareness of and support for the affordable housing crisis plaguing the country; and of course to see the United States the best way anyone could! Along the way we made 13 stops to help affordable housing organizations build a home for a family in need. It is through meeting the families and individuals receiving a home that we truly began to understand the opportunity, freedom and privilege that comes from having a stable and reliable home.
This series of monotypes puts into print the moments like we experienced on the side of Route 20 in Nebraska, changing the fourth flat tire of the day under the blaring mid-afternoon sun. We were continuously reminded of how magnificent and powerful the mountains are every time we sweat our way to the top. It was also in those moments we were reminded that getting to the top was the hardest thing we would do that day.
